Module 5 Blog Posting

For the science fiction assignment in Module 4, the movie that I viewed was purchased through renting at a local store.  I believe that the competition between video on demand and DVDS is an example of red queens.  Red Queens represents competition two technologies and other competitors are left behind (Thornburg, 2009).    These two categories would fall under Red Queens because most competition today comes from people purchasing movies through Netflix where they can purchase these movies through the comfort of their own home and not even have to leave their homes in the meantime.  Purchasing movies through certain vendors such as through Red Box is considered as a major competition for Netflix, because people can purchase these movies for very low costs, but they have to leave their homes in order to purchase and buy these movies.  All other competitors, such as Blockbuster, etc.  have found it difficult to keep up with these two competitors because of low costs and convenience of purchases.
On the tetrad, DVDs falls under the category of Enhances.  This is because the DVDs were developed in order to enhance the way in which people view or watch movies.  The DVDs replaced VHS tapes and allowed for individuals to have the convenience of viewing movies better and clearer using the DVD players.  On the tetrad, video on demand would fall under the category of Obsoletes.  This is because video on demand has pretty much taken the place of renting movies of DVDs.  Today, people are able to view movies online or download them.

  1. Schquetta,
I find it interesting that you rented from a store. We do not have any video rental stores in our area. I think the DVD kiosks will be a short lived endeavor with all of the video-on-demand. There may be a few that stick around for while, but they will slowly disappear.

    1. Hi Schquetta,
Which store did you rent your video from? In Pensacola, Florida we have Red Box. We had the Block Buster Blue Box but they went out of business. Do you think the Red Box will become obsolete due to Netflix or others.
